For the fifth year I’ll be running Social Media Summer School in January and I honestly can’t imagine January without it! It’s starting a little later than usual because (drum roll) my clever son got picked in the state indoor soccer team so we’ll be in Melbourne for the nationals in mid-January, but I’ll still be back at my desk in time to fit in Summer School (phew!).
I can’t wait to welcome back returning Summer Schoolers and also to meet a whole crop of newbies. Summer School is for anyone with a social media presence who wants to figure out how to make the best use of it in 2023, to promote whatever it is they need to promote. We have small business owners, company employees, bloggers and podcasters, artists, authors and more amongst the Summer School alumni and it’s a wonderful way to get your online presence set up for the year – with the aim of making it work for you effectively without you having to spend endless hours feeding the beast.
Since many of us have less work on during January, it’s the perfect time to sit down and figure out the best approach to the year so that you can promote your work brilliantly and (nearly) effortlessly! With a bit more thinking space you’ll be ready to hear the current best practice ideas for all the social media platforms you use and have some creative ideas about how to use them in a way that fits with your work rhythm, your audience, your values and more.
What will Social Media Summer School involve?
When you sign up to Social Media Summer School you’ll be added to a private Facebook group where you’ll get short training content from me each day, the chance to chat with your fellow students, and three Zoom calls with the group which will including additional training, some networking and the chance to have all your questions answered. You’ll be able to watch recordings of the calls if you can’t make it.
Social Media Summer School runs for nine days from 22 January to 30 January and each day has its own special objective:

- Your WHY (always important!) which social media platforms you’ll emphasise to suit

- Facebook – pages and groups
- Instagram – posts and stories
- Reels and other video content
- LinkedIn – your profile, posts, articles
- Other platforms: TikTok, Twitter (maybe?!), and more

FAQ for Social Media Summer School
Do I need existing social media platforms?
Probably, yes. The Summer School won’t cover setting up any social media platforms so you’ll get the most out of it if you’ve already got, say a Facebook page and an Instagram account or LinkedIn profile set up, and know the basics of how to use them. If you haven’t posted on them much, that’s OK – we’ll get that sorted!
How much time will it take?
Each weekday I’ll add a small task in the Facebook group that you can do to help you make progress – sometimes it’ll be a ten-minute task, sometimes half an hour. There will also be three live Zoom calls (you can choose how much you want to be involved!) – one at the start (Sunday 22nd January, 4pm Perth time), one in the middle (Wednesday 25th January, 4pm Perth time) and one on the last day (Monday 30th January, 4pm Perth time) which will last 30 to 45 minutes – if you can’t make those times you can watch the replay afterwards, but if you’re there live you can ask extra questions.
Remember, social media success is the sum of many small actions. Even if you don’t have time to do everything in the Social Media Summer School, you’re bound to take enough small actions that your 2023 works out way better!
Do I have to live in Western Australia to take part?
You do not! Thanks to Covid, everyone loves Zoom now (okay “loves” might be an exaggeration but everyone knows how to use it, at least) and in previous years we’ve had participants from around Australia and even around the world. Note that pricing is in Australian dollars, though. You can check the time conversion here if you need. Of course, the live sessions will be recorded and shared in the private Facebook group, so it’s definitely not the end of the world if you miss the live sessions, and you’ll have the chance to submit questions ahead of time.
Will the content be the same as the previous Summer Media Social School?
Nope! Every year is different and this year will be more different than ever. Of course some of the key concepts will be similar but the content is all fresh, the exercises will be different and of course, since the world of social media changes daily, the specifics will be up-to-date and relevant to 2023. In past Summer Schools I’ve had many “repeat” participants and they’ve always got a lot out of it.
Why so reasonably priced?
I actually love running Summer School and I get a lot out of it – it’s the kick up the bottom I need to get MY year going, too! I want the price to be a no-brainer so that you’ll sign up and join me, quick-smart.
